Not to mention, Envy receives “joy at another's misfortune” according to Dante, which probably indicates that he/she is the one surveilling the protagonists in both games, feeling pleasure from watching them suffer. In Dante's Purgatory, it is written that the punishment for the envious is to have their EYES sewn shut with wire because they gained sinful pleasure from seeing others brought low. I believe that the eyes also represent one of the Seven Deadly Sins: ENVY. If you have played both Little Nightmares I and II, you will notice how both games have something to do with eyes. I also have a theory with the metaphor of the eyes and what it implies in the Little Nightmare Series. (The Thin Man) That is why The Thin Man is weaker than his younger self because Mono’s consciousness is still intact as a child. He became what seems an empty shell, a soulless body of which only fear and pain drive his behavior/actions. But, when Six decided to abandon Mono, he snapped. The reason why he was able to endure though was because of the presence of Six. Due to the horrendous and terrifying encounters that Mono has suffered through, he slowly lost his sense of self-worth as time progressed in the game. Pride is defined as high regard for one's self-worth. Thus, his overconfidence and self-pride are what led him to his ruin. As The Thin Man, he does not give up and believes that he can still change the outcome but rather distracts and hinders his younger self from achieving that goal, creating a time paradox that never ends. He eventually fails and falls to his demise, becoming what’s known as The Thin Man. Mono’s arrogance of having too much pride in himself of thinking that he could protect Six while also saving himself is his sin. Mono could represent both positive pride and negative pride, but I see pride in a more negative light when it comes to MONO. Mono) tries to kidnap Six)īut that wouldn't make sense since his name is One, right? According to Dante's Purgatory, One represents Pride. (This can be shown when the Thin Man (aka. This would initiate Mono's anger and hate towards Six. But when the story came to an end, Six betrayed Mono. Mono helped Six because of the fellow feeling he felt for Six, for they were placed in the same situation. He isn't just a random character that appears as the protagonist in Little Nightmares II, He is one of the Seven Deadly Sins as well.Īt first, I believed that mono best fit the 3rd Seven Deadly Sins, Wrath (aka. But there is one more definition to the word Mono: ONE. As you can tell, his characteristics fit the name perfectly for he was betrayed and left alone in the Squirming Abyss. Now you may ask, "Then what's up with mono? What is his purpose in the series?" I believe that SIX does not represent Wrath, rather Gluttony (aka. As you could probably tell, SIX who was the protagonist of Little Nightmares I was suffering from hunger that slowly escalated throughout the game. If you look at the arrangement of the Seven Deadly Sins in this order, you can see that the sixth terrace level is indicated as Gluttony. "The Purgatory of Dante Alighieri" organizes the seven deadly sins in terraces, listing them in levels from 1~7. But the ideology of "purgatory" orders them differently. "Is this theory really it? Is it really that simple? Then what is the purpose of the new protagonist MONO?" Then I realized something.Īccording to Roman Catholic Theology, the Seven Deadly Sins are typically ordered as: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth. (Six = Wrath, Guests = Gluttony, The Lady = Lust, etc.) Although I also believed that this theory was correct, playing Little Nightmares II made me question myself. Now, I know that many of you have already talked about this theory years ago when the first game came out the theory explaining that each of the characters in Little Nightmares I represents the seven deadly sins. But what does it have to do with the game series " Little Nightmares"? We all know that the seven deadly sins are seven behaviors or feelings that inspire further sin. Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, and Sloth. SPOILER WARNING! IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED OR WATCHED LITTLE NIGHTMARES I & II, DO NOT READ THIS PAGE.
